Panchakarma

The Pancha Karma cleansing therapy in Ayurveda is more than just a sequence of actions – it is a healing journey designed to purify both body and mind at a fundamental level. The term “Pancha Karma” is derived from the five major therapeutic procedures (pancha = five, karma = action, deed, practice), which are carried out alongside smaller preparatory measures (purva karma). The goal is not only to cleanse the body but also to restore inner balance.

At the heart of every traditional Pancha Karma treatment is the art of internal and external “oiling.” Ayurveda believes that toxins in the body, which can cause imbalances and various symptoms, are often fat-soluble. Through targeted internal and external oiling, these toxins can be mobilised, transported to the digestive tract, and ultimately eliminated.
The selection of the five main procedures (karma) —Vamana (therapeutic vomiting), Virechana (therapeutic purgation), Nasya (cleansing of the upper respiratory tract with medicated oil), Vasti (Ayurvedic enemas), and Rakta Mokshana (bloodletting)—is individually tailored based on factors such as age, constitution, and symptomatology. The 14-day Pancha Karma retreat offered by my experienced team and me provides a holistic experience with long-lasting benefits.
